What business owners and leaders crave is certainty; having a good idea what is happening to the economy and their markets is key to making business decisions that will impact upon their future viability and performance.

Of course some things are always beyond their control but even then the list of those areas they can impact seem to be growing; moving business applications to the cloud, new and forthcoming industry regulation and compliance regulations for example, can conflict with and impact plans for business growth and cost control.

Many industry observers are agreed that we are entering a period of fundamental change.

Every business, and every person, is using technology to change how they get things done, lowering the barriers to entry to new markets and enabling the development of new business models and services.

In their latest report the UK’s Cloud Industry Forum (CIF) notes that enterprises are using more cloud-based services than ever before – and they are doing so in pursuit of a wide range of benefits, chief among them the flexibility and agility it provides.

This shift towards procuring IT and Communications-as-a-service places a greater reliance on trusted third parties but is at the same time freeing up local in-house IT resources to instead focus on activities that can help deliver wide-reaching business change, while exploring new app development methodologies. Indeed, some organisations are now taking the opportunity to make early assessments of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.

There is little evidence that the rate of adoption for the cloud business application deployment model is slowing with the CIF stating that 74% of enterprises either have a digital transformation strategy, or are currently implementing one, and almost all expect to have a digital transformation strategy in place within the next two years, as they seek to counter rising levels of disruption – all of which is fuelling uptake of the cloud.

Enterprises are facing challenges here however with, for example, leveraging legacy IT and communications infrastructure that wasn’t built for or and doesn’t support a ‘cloud experience’.

At the same time enterprises need to establish how best to secure the cloud, detect threats earlier and respond faster against new background of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) that are now in force.

Compliance with GDPR has been challenging for enterprises.

It has not been a case of achieving the required standard and then putting the whole issue behind them and getting on with other pressing problems. New processes need to be maintained ongoing and audited regularly to ensure the enterprises avoid swingeing financial penalties for non-compliance.

This, without even mentioning the increasing risk of a cyber-attack breaching the repository holding all their personal data, is clearly no small challenge for any enterprise large or small.

Given that migration to the cloud brings with it so many business benefits – not least of which are the cloud’s ability to control costs and increase business agility, means that enterprises have lot to consider today.

The net result increasingly begins to look like unprecedented levels of disruption and increased competition.
