At the start of 2018, research revealed that a staggering 93% of SMEs in London were struggling with productivity. Even in the highest performing areas, numbers were still troubling – 78% in Yorkshire confessed to facing productivity challenges.
Clearly, productivity is a big topic for SMEs. In fact, the problem is so pressing that a group of business leaders have launched an attempt ‘to improve the efficiency of small and medium-sized enterprises in an effort to close the large productivity gap between Britain’s most successful companies and the underperforming majority’.
But despite the widespread nature of the issue, it doesn’t appear to be an immediate concern for many. In fact, a survey by HSBC revealed just 7% of respondents planned to place boosting productivity at the top of their agenda, with four times as many being worried about a possible economic slowdown. Which is concerning when you consider how crucial productivity is for growing SMEs.
Cause and effect: why productivity should be a key concern
Low productivity has many causes, including employee disengagement, staff sickness, company culture, and a lack of skilled workers. It can also be caused by inefficient infrastructure, like outdated business telecoms and sub-par equipment.
