2019 GX Summit – It’s a ‘rap’

Highlights from our annual customer conference

Centered around this year’s theme, Foundations, we challenged guests to think about the scale and pace of their digital transformation strategies – and the technology that underpins it.

This year, some of Gamma’s familiar faces took to the GX Summit 2019 stage for one day only in the GX Factor!

We’re delighted to announce that by doing so we raised a fantastic £2038 for Starlight Children’s Foundation. Thank you very much to those who placed their GX Factor winners vote and who kindly contributed via the donation pots at the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

Starlight Children’s Foundation is the national charity dedicated to brightening the lives of seriously ill children and their families. We are pleased that with your help we have been able to support them this year.

How to bring remote teams together with Unified Communications

The world of work has opened up significantly in recent years. It’s no longer a case of turning up at nine and being chained to a desk for eight hours: one report from 2018 found that ‘more than two-thirds of people around the world work away from the office at least once every week’, while over half (53%) ‘work remotely for at least half the week’. Technology has changed the game, freeing up businesses (and the teams within them) to function in new ways.

As a result, businesses have embraced a newfound flexibility, whether that’s employees working from home, dialling in from the road, or working from a different office location altogether.

The benefits of remote working

Remote working can facilitate better work-life balance, making employees happier and more engaged. It can boost productivity: a two-year study from Stanford University discovered that ‘work-from-home employees work a true full-shift (or more) versus being late to the office or leaving early multiple times a week and found it less distracting and easier to concentrate at home.’

It can even help businesses to attract the best staff. A remote working strategy means businesses can hire the right employees regardless of location, as well as bringing together teams from around the world. For growing and large businesses, the chances are, staff may be located in different offices. Whether that’s two offices in the same city, or a series of branches across countries. With the right communications infrastructure, staff in New York can easily work alongside colleagues in London.

All of which sounds highly positive. However, this does mean that businesses are at the mercy of comms technology – because for remote workers and teams, it’s crucial that infrastructure works smoothly and seamlessly. But all too often, that isn’t the case.

Disparate tools create a disjointed experience

Having to use a mobile phone with no access to the desk-phone directory. Not being able to access internal email systems from home.

Poor connectivity resulting in shaky, incoherent video conferences. All of these are examples of how outdated communications infrastructure can hold remote workers and disparate teams back from true efficiency, turning what should be a positive experience into a chore.

The problem tends to arise from businesses having updated their infrastructure piecemeal over the years – meaning they work well in isolation, but they’re not effective together. As a result, employees suffer from a disjointed experience. Numbers can’t easily be ported from device to device, services can’t be accessed efficiently from outside the office, and connectivity services aren’t reliable enough to support data-hungry applications like video.

Change is needed, if businesses are to keep embracing the benefits of remote working and get ready for future challenges. Fortunately, with the advent of Unified Communications (UC), an effective solution is here.

UC is a reliable infrastructure which enables businesses to integrate all of the ways they communicate, including voice, video and data. Health and Social Care Network (HSCN) – a reliable, secure data network designed for efficient collaboration

The Health and Social Care Network (HSCN) is a “network of networks” for organisations who provide health and social care services to communicate with each other, exchange data and access NHS core applications, enabling tighter collaboration in an efficient and secure way.  It is a key stepping stone to digitally transforming the patient experience.

It is a direct replacement for N3, with a robust process for migrating your old N3 connections to new HSCN connections, including IP addresses

But it’s not only about migrating services from the old N3 network.  It’s also about allowing access to broader health and social care organisations, such as pharmacies or opticians who currently do not have N3 connectivity but need it to operate effectively.  It also extends to local government, ambulance and police also.

MyWiFi Caller Mobile App – Download for FREE!

Providing good indoor coverage has always been a challenge for mobile providers, and at the same time an increasing necessity as mobile traffic is increasingly substituting fixed traffic for business users.

To further complicate this equation new building requirements such as soundproofing and energy efficiency requirements has meant that building materials and techniques have made in-building mobile signal penetration much more difficult.

MyWiFi Caller is an app for Gamma Mobile users that provides mobile voice connectivity when the user has Wifi coverage and is connected to the network. All Gamma mobile users will have received a text message on 25th June with full details and support to download directly to their handset.

The MyWiFi Caller app can be simply downloaded from either the Android Google Play store or Apple iOS app store. After a simple registration process, the user is ready to go.
